The Wedding Season Begins

March 22, 2009

We have officially entered the Nigerian wedding season. The first big wedding I know of occured this past weekend. Congrats Chi!

Now, it’s time for the Nigerian community to contribute to the economy with all those plane tickets back and forth, venues, caterers, DJs, live bands, and the all important asoebi. Remember to check out www.fabnaija.com for all of the above.

Recently, with the economy doing what the economy is doing, there’s been much talk about whether it’s a waste of money to get your friends’ asoebi. I’ve always maintained that as with everything, asoebi is good when done in moderation. For example a $100 asoebi is well within my own means (may not be within yours), but I’d definitely stay away from the $2500 ones (which by the way, there’s hardly any justification for anyway).

With most people going for ankara asoebis these days, there’s no reason why you can’t participate. As a rule of thumb, asoebi is probably not too expensive if it will cost you less or about the same to buy a dress or other outfit for the party yourself.

If you’re going to spend money on a dress, you might be better off spending it on buying your friends’ asoebi.

On the other hand, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with saying NO. It’s ok to refuse to participate. Everyone knows we are in a recession so it’s ok to say you can’t afford to buy the asoebi. You can also limit your expenses by buying asoebis for only the weddings of close friends. Trust me, if someone is not close to you, she’ll not appreciate that you spent money buying the asoebi. It might make you feel better, but it does not necessarily make her like you any more than she did before you bought. Some people buy the asoebi to curry favor with the bride or her family, but that’s really just a waste of your resources. (She didn’t like you before you bought it and she won’t like you after). Stick to spending your hard earned money on those that really care.

And enjoy the wedding season. Please feel free to keep sending us more questions and comments as we welcome your thoughts.

How the recession can help your love life

February 10, 2009

What's the famous saying: When life gives you lemons make lemonade. If you take this approach during the recession, you might actually find that the recession has a positive effect on your love life in 3 major ways.

1. More Time to Find The One: If you are in the worst case scenario because you've suddenly found yourself out of a job or your hours have been cut at work, you may suddenly find yourself with more time on your hands that you did not have before. No longer required to work late hours, you may have more time to go out to your place(s) of social interests, be it clubs, church, libraries, coffee shops, etc. You may even find yourself with more time to volunteer.

More time for social activities could not only mean you have more time to catch up with your friends and family members, it might also mean you have more time to meet new friends and who knows….meet the One. So keep an open mind and even if your career is not going well and it might take forever for things to pick up, there might be a bright side to all this extra time on your hands.

2. Finding Out the Real Person: The recession might help your love life if you're dating because now that money is tight, you might be able to figure out if you and and your "intended" can hang with each other through the tough times or if that special person is just with you for the money. Most people can promise to be with you "in sickness and in health" when you are actually healthy or "for richer and for poorer" when you are in fact rich. If things are not going well, this might a chance to see how your "intended" handles financial stress and whether or not you want to move forward with marriage plans.

3. Enjoying The Best Things: "The best things in life are free," or at least so they say. With the recession, here's your chance to focus on the Best things in life. The small things, the free things, the things that sometimes get lost in all the financial enjoyment.

Here's your chance to find out what's most important to your date and focus on providing those things during a date instead of simply spending money lavishly. Perhaps focus on talking and finding out more about each other instead of going out spending time and money with others but never really talking to each other.

All in all, the point is life is what you make it, so make it good.

Finding and Keeping Your Love Life (from Oprah)

Jan 29, 2009

We thought this might be helpful if you are single and trying to find "the One." Afterall, we can't have weddings unless you meet that special person.

Could this be the year you meet your soul mate? Renowned anthropologist Helen Fisher, PhD, author of the new book Why Him? Why Her?, has a formula for romance based on mixing the right brain chemistry.
